Elementary School
The elementary school caters to children aged 6 to 11 years, providing education focused on acquiring written language skills (cycle 2) and deepening knowledge (cycle 3). The programs are national and mandatory for all teachers and students. Since 1990, the expected competencies of students have been defined by cycles. Evaluation tools are provided to teachers, giving them national references. Two main axes structure primary education: mastery of language and the French language, and civic education.

The cycle of fundamental learning
The subjects covered include French, English, artistic education (Art and music), mathematics, moral and civic education, physical and sports education, and the exploration of the world (living things, matter, space, time).
Cycle 3: Year 4 – 6
The subjects covered include French, English, artistic education (Art and music), mathematics, moral and civic education, history, geography, science and technology (materials and technical objects, planet Earth, matter, movement, energy and information, living things), physical and sports education, and mathematics.

Elementary School Education and Programs
Programs aligned with the common core of knowledge, skills, and culture ensure the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills. They elaborate on and specify the objectives defined by the common core, which revolves around five domains:
- Languages for thinking and communicating
- Methods and tools for learning
- Personal and citizen formation
- Representations of the world and human activity
These programs, designed to be simpler and more readable, are more conducive to the success of all students and the improvement of teaching quality. Their objectives must be clear and defined in a progression tailored to the learning needs of children.
The programs must enable, for each student, the progressive acquisition of knowledge and skills within the three cycles of compulsory schooling:
- Cycle 2, the cycle of fundamental learning (Year 1, 2, and 3)
- Cycle 3, the consolidation cycle (Year 4, 5, and 6)
- Cycle 4, the deepening cycle (Year 5, 6, and 7)
The programs will present the challenges and training objectives of each cycle, highlighting the contribution of different disciplinary fields to the acquisition of each of the five domains of the common core. They will specify, by disciplinary field or subject, the expected levels of mastery at the end of the cycle, as well as the knowledge and skills to be acquired. They will also indicate the necessary progression markers to organise students’ education over the three years of the cycle.

Languages
Extended Australian Program:
All students from year 1 – 5 are part of the Extended Australian Programme (EAP). In secondary school, however, the school offers an Extended British Programme which prepares students for the French International Baccalaureate, the BFI. This programme is selective and students must submit an application to the secondary school commission. Read more about the EBP here.
English in primary school:
- 5 hours of the NSW curriculum per week
- 1.5 hours of the French curriculum in English per week
- Total: 6.5 hours of English per week
NAPLAN: Year 3 and 5 students sit the National Assessment Program on Literacy and Numeracy in May, along with all other local schools. Our school’s results from past NAPLAN tests demonstrate the excellent English level of our students.
Cambridge certifications: for French-speaking students who are now to LCSl.
Delf certifications: for English-speaking students who are new to LCS.
My child is predominantly French speaking:
For the first year at LCS, your child, depending on his/her level of English, may be in an “EAL” (English as an Additional Language) class. EAL students will study English in a small group with a teacher specialised in beginners’ English. When the students are ready, they will leave the transition group to begin studying the New South Wales English programme with the rest of the class.
My child is predominantly English speaking:
Intensive or one-off FLSco (French as a study language) sessions will be put in place after an assessment by our teaching team. A personalised plan (PPRE FLSco) will map out the help provided by the school as well as the support expected from the parents.
FLSCO – French as the Language of Schooling
Our school includes two specialised teachers responsible for supporting children with little or no proficiency in French. Students in need of extra assistance in French as the language of schooling receive specific support in small groups during class time to avoid overloading their already busy schedules. A personalised educational success plan is then established between the school and the family.
Coup de Pouce – A Helping Hand
In continuation of the French assistance program, the LCS (Learning and Support Center) introduces the “CLUB COUP DE POUCE” (Help Club) after school.
- 2 clubs in GS (Kindergarten) to allow young speakers to develop their oral expression.
- 2 clubs in CP (Year 1) to assist children struggling in learning reading and writing.
- 2 clubs in CE1 (Year 2) to foster a love for books and the joy of reading.
Each club consists of 4 to 6 students identified by the class teacher. The main objectives are as follows:
- Address the support needs of students struggling with language (GS) and reading-writing (CP).
- Assist families in supporting their child’s education.
- Enable tailored monitoring of the child, both at school and at home, through a better understanding of the French education system.
It involves a commitment to be present four evenings a week for 1 hour for GS (language club) and 1.5 hours for CP (reading-writing club), engaging in brief and playful activities guided by the Coup de Pouce association.
For CE1 (Year 2) clubs focus on books, the commitment is 1.5 hours twice a week.
Coup de Pouce clubs in France: Since 1994, over 140,000 children and their parents have benefited from these programs.
Enhancing Education
Learning about Science and New Technology
Our school has powerful tools to contribute to the mastery and development of new technologies, including computers, tablets, interactive whiteboards, science kits, and 3D printers.
Excursions
Regular school outings are organised across all levels, including visits to museums, opera, discovery centres, and sports activities, based on the class curriculum and available opportunities.
The LCS provides GS students with the opportunity to experience a night at school. Under the supervision of the teaching team, the theatre transforms into a camp where games, activities, and nights under tents foster the learning of autonomy, community living, and camaraderie. Outings and camps are also offered for CE1 (Year 2) and CM1 (Year 4) classes. Families will be asked for a financial contribution for these outings.
